About this pattern
This flower granny square blanket pattern turns one cheerful motif into a bedroom-worthy heirloom. Each square blooms from a cream eight-petal flower, then grows plump puff-stitch leaves that march toward the corners, so joined squares create a sweeping diamond garden. It's a relaxing repeat you can carry anywhere, one square at a time. Make a cozy throw for the sofa, a full bedspread, or matching pillow covers. It also makes a treasured wedding, housewarming or anniversary gift.
Skill level: Intermediate. You'll use puff stitches, a tr cluster, and work behind petals. If you can make a classic granny square, you can make this.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
- Keep your puffs even and plump
- Pull every loop up to the same dc height before you yo and draw through all 9. If the hook sticks, rotate it slightly downward as you pull through, or try a hook with a tapered (inline) throat. In the next round, work into the top of the puff, not into its locking ch-1, or your stitch count will grow.
- Make neat color changes in the flower
- Join each new color with a sl st and leave 6" tails. Weave Color A tails into the back of its own petals and Color B tails into Color B stitches, so no cream peeks through the burgundy. A standing sc join also works well for Rnd 3 if you prefer.
- Fix cupping or ruffling early
- If your square cups after Rnd 6, your corners are too tight: chain 3 in the corners instead of 2, or go up a hook size. If it ruffles, your dc are too loose; go down a hook size. Count each side at the end of every round, because one missed stitch shifts the leaf vine off the diagonal.
Materials needed
Yarn
- Yarn: a smooth, plied yarnWorsted weight · One square: 115 yd (105 m) · 6 yd (5.5 m) · 2 yd (2 m)
- Color A (petals): Cream or ivoryWorsted weight
- Color B (main): Burgundy, wine or raspberryWorsted weight
- Color C (flower center): Tan, gold or beige (or use Color A)Worsted weight
Tools
- Crochet hook: 5.0 mm (US H-8). Go up to 5.5 mm (US I-9) if your puffs feel tight.
- Tapestry (yarn) needle
- 4 stitch markers (one per corner helps on puff rounds)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mats and rust-proof pins (or a spray bottle or steamer)
- Pillow insert, 12" or 16" (for the matching pillow)
- No safety eyes or stuffing needed
Gauge & finished measurements
Gauge: Gauge matters here, because every square must match for a neat join. 14 dc and 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) in Color B with a 5.0 mm hook. Quick check: Rnds 1 to 4 measure about 3.5" (9 cm) from side to side. Finished square: 12" x 12" (30.5 cm) after Rnd 13, before blocking.

The pattern
The flower
Work in the round with the RS facing you throughout. Don't turn. Stitch counts in brackets are the total for the round. Puffs count as stitches; the ch-1 that locks each puff does not.
The square base
Puff-stitch leaves and frame
From Rnd 5 on, every round starts the same way: sl st in next ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 2 dc in same sp. Every round ends the same way: dc in first ch-2 sp, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Each corner is (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc). Place a stitch marker in each corner sp if it helps.
Info: Weave in all ends. You've made 32 puff leaves: each puff sits 4 sts from a corner, so every puff round steps outward and the leaves form a vine along each diagonal.
Block the squares
Block every square to 12" x 12" before joining (see Care Instructions). Matching sizes now saves a lot of easing later.
Join the squares
Lay out your squares in the grid for your size. Where four squares meet, the leaf vines line up into a big diamond across the blanket.
Info: Prefer a crochet join? Hold squares WS together and sl st through back loops only for a slightly raised seam on the RS.
Scalloped border
Info: Each side now has 44 sts per square + 1 (the corner sc at each end counted once per side):
Info: Size: Throw (4 x 5) · Short sides: 177 sts · Long sides: 221 sts
Info: Size: Twin (6 x 8) · Short sides: 265 sts · Long sides: 353 sts
Info: Size: Queen (8 x 9) · Short sides: 353 sts · Long sides: 397 sts
Info: Weave in all ends and give the border a light steam or spray to open the scallops.

Important notes
- Tip: Blanket amounts include joining and border. Buy about 10% extra and choose one dye lot for Color B.
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet, st(s) = stitch(es), sp(s) = space(s), sk = skip, beg = beginning, rep = repeat, Rnd(s) = round(s), RS = right side, tr-cl = 3-treble cluster (see below), puff = puff stitch (see below).
- Tip: 3-treble cluster (tr-cl): *Yo twice, insert hook in st, pull up a loop, (yo, draw through 2 loops) twice; rep from * 2 more times in the same st. Yo and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
- Tip: Puff stitch (puff): (Yo, insert hook in st, pull up a loop to dc height) 4 times. You'll have 9 loops on your hook. Yo and draw through all 9 loops, then ch 1 to lock. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch. Each puff counts as 1 st.
- Tip: Corner: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) worked in a ch-2 corner sp.
- Tip: Beg ch-5: Counts as 1 dc + the ch-2 corner sp.
- Tip: Washing: Always follow your yarn label first. For acrylic or acrylic-cotton blends, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a large mesh bag or pillowcase. Use mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which can flatten the puffs. Hand wash wool blends in cool water and never wring.
- Tip: Drying: A full bedspread gets very heavy when wet. Roll it in towels to remove water, then dry it flat across a clean bed, drying rack or several towels. Don't hang it, as the weight will stretch it out of shape. Tumble dry on low only if the label allows.
- Tip: Blocking squares: Acrylic: Pin each square to 12" x 12" on blocking mats. Hover a steam iron or steamer about 1" above it without touching, then let it cool and dry before unpinning. Don't press the puffs flat. Cotton or wool: Soak squares in cool water for 15 minutes, gently squeeze, roll in a towel, then pin to size and let dry completely.
- Tip: Storage: Fold loosely and store in a breathable cotton bag, never sealed plastic. Refold along different lines now and then to avoid permanent creases.
- Tip: Yarn: Worsted weight (#4 Medium) in a smooth, plied yarn. Soft acrylic or an acrylic-cotton blend is best for a bedspread: it's washable, light, and shows off the puff stitches. 100% cotton gives crisp definition but makes a heavy blanket.
- Tip: Yarn amounts: One square: 115 yd (105 m) · 6 yd (5.5 m) · 2 yd (2 m); Throw: 2,400 yd (2,195 m), about 12 to 13 skeins of 200 yd · 120 yd (110 m) · 40 yd (37 m); Twin coverlet: 5,750 yd (5,260 m), about 29 skeins · 300 yd (275 m) · 100 yd (91 m); Queen bedspread: 8,600 yd (7,865 m), about 43 skeins · 450 yd (410 m) · 150 yd (137 m); 12" pillow: 250 yd (229 m) · 6 yd (5.5 m) · 2 yd (2 m); 16" pillow: 430 yd (393 m) · 6 yd (5.5 m) · 2 yd (2 m).
- Tip: Gauge: If your square is bigger, go down a hook size. If it's smaller, go up one. Make your first square, block it, and measure before you continue.
Pattern FAQ
How many granny squares do I need for a queen size blanket?
With 12" squares, a queen bedspread that drapes over the sides takes 72 squares in an 8 x 9 layout, for about 98" x 110" with the border. For a queen-size throw that sits on top of the bed, 6 x 7 (42 squares) is enough.
How much yarn do I need for a granny square bedspread?
Plan on about 115 yards of main color per 12" square, plus joining and border. That's roughly 2,400 yards for a throw, 5,750 yards for a twin and 8,600 yards for a queen in worsted weight. Buy 10% extra from one dye lot.
Is a puff stitch granny square good for beginners?
It's best for an advanced beginner moving into intermediate. If you can work dc and a basic granny square, you can learn the puff stitch in a few tries. Practice 5 or 6 puffs on a swatch before starting Rnd 5.
What is the best yarn for a crochet bedspread?
Soft worsted acrylic or an acrylic-cotton blend is the most practical choice: it's machine washable, durable and lighter than cotton. Pure cotton gives beautiful stitch definition but becomes heavy on a large blanket. Wool blends are the warmest but need hand washing.
