About this pattern
This daisy granny square pattern brings a whole meadow indoors. Each little square starts with a sunny gold center and crisp white petals, then blooms into a ring of soft puff stitches in sage, forest green or cream before a neat cream frame. The squares are quick and addictive, perfect for using up a few minutes here and there. Arrange them in diagonal color bands for a cozy cottage-style bedspread with matching pillow shams. It's also a lovely gift for a new home, a nursery or a garden lover.
Skill level: Easy. You'll use sc, hdc, dc, tr and a simple puff stitch, plus a few color changes. If you can make a classic granny square, you can make this.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
- Make even, plump puffs
- Pull each loop up to the same height, about as tall as a dc, before closing the puff. If drawing through all 7 loops is hard, loosen the loops a little or use a hook with a tapered throat. Always lock each puff with ch 1, then work the next round into the top of the puff, not the ch-1.
- Keep the daisy petals neat
- Work the petals into front loops only and Rnd 4 into back loops only, so the petals sit on top of the green and don't get pulled under. Before Rnd 4, fold the petals toward you and hold them out of the way with your thumb.
- Weave as you go and batch your work
- With three colors per square, you'll have about 8 ends each. Crochet over tails in the next round where you can, and weave the rest in right away. Making all the daisy centers first, then all the petals, then all the puff rounds is faster than finishing one square at a time.

Gauge & finished measurements
Gauge: Gauge matters, because every square has to be the same size for a neat join. 14 dc and 8 rows = 4" (10 cm) with a 5.0 mm hook. Quick check: After Rnd 5, the square measures about 3.25" (8 cm) from side to side. Finished square: 6" x 6" (15 cm) after Rnd 8.

The pattern
The daisy
Work in rounds with the RS facing you; don't turn. "Puff color" means B1 (sage), B2 (forest) or A (cream), depending on which square you're making. Stitch counts in brackets are the total for the round.
The puff ring
Info: Each side now reads: tr, dc, 9 hdc, dc, tr.
The cream frame
Info: Make the number of squares in each puff color for your size (see Pattern Overview).
Block the squares
Block every square to 6" x 6" (see Care Instructions). Small squares that all match make a much flatter blanket.
Lay out diagonal color bands
Repeat the three puff colors in order, shifting one place to the left on every row. The colors line up into diagonal stripes across the bed.

Matching pillow sham (fits 20" x 26" / 51 x 66 cm)
Important notes
- Tip: Each square uses about 18 yd (16.5 m) of A for petals and frame, 20 yd (18 m) of its puff color (B1, B2 or A) and 2 yd (2 m) of C.
- Tip: Amounts include joining and border. Buy about 10% extra and keep each color in one dye lot. With 200 yd skeins, a throw needs about 12 skeins of A, 3 each of sage and forest, and 1 of gold.
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet, puff = puff stitch (see below), FLO / BLO = front loop only / back loop only, st(s) = stitch(es), sp(s) = space(s), sk = skip, beg = beginning, rep = repeat, Rnd(s) = round(s), RS = right side.
- Tip: Puff stitch (puff): (Yo, insert hook in st or sp, pull up a loop to about dc height) 3 times. You'll have 7 loops on the hook. Yo and draw through all 7 loops, then ch 1 to lock. The ch 1 doesn't count; each puff counts as 1 st.
- Tip: Daisy petal: Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch. This makes one slim petal.
- Tip: Color change: Fasten off the old color and join the new color with a sl st where the pattern says.
- Tip: Washing: Follow your yarn label first. For acrylic or acrylic-cotton blends, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle inside a large mesh bag. Add a color-catcher sheet the first few times, since green and gold dyes can tint the cream. Use mild detergent and skip fabric softener, which flattens puff stitches.
- Tip: Drying: Roll the blanket in towels to remove water, then dry it flat across a bed or drying rack. Don't hang it wet, as the weight will stretch the squares. Tumble dry on low only if the label allows.
- Tip: Blocking squares: Acrylic: Pin each square to 6" x 6". Hover a steamer about 1" above it without touching, let it cool and dry, then unpin. Fluff the daisy petals with your fingers. Cotton or wool: Soak for 15 minutes in cool water, squeeze gently, roll in a towel, pin to size and let dry completely.
- Tip: Storage: Fold loosely and store in a breathable cotton bag, away from direct sunlight so the greens don't fade.
- Tip: Yarn: Worsted weight (#4 Medium), smooth and plied. Soft acrylic or an acrylic-cotton blend is light, washable and shows off the puff stitches.
- Tip: Yarn amounts: Throw: 2,250 yd (2,060 m) · 550 yd (503 m) · 550 yd (503 m) · 175 yd (160 m); Twin coverlet: 4,500 yd (4,115 m) · 1,100 yd (1,005 m) · 1,100 yd (1,005 m) · 350 yd (320 m); Queen coverlet: 6,500 yd (5,945 m) · 1,600 yd (1,465 m) · 1,600 yd (1,465 m) · 500 yd (457 m); Pillow sham (each): 660 yd (605 m) · 160 yd (146 m) · 160 yd (146 m) · 50 yd (46 m).
- Tip: Color A: Cream or ivory (petals, frames, cream puff squares, joining and border)
- Tip: Gauge: Square too big? Go down a hook size. Too small? Go up one. Make one square in each puff color and compare them, since different shades of the same yarn can work up slightly differently.
Pattern FAQ
How many daisy granny squares do I need for a blanket?
With 6" squares, a throw takes 80 squares (8 x 10), a twin coverlet 165 (11 x 15) and a queen coverlet 240 (15 x 16). For a baby blanket, 6 x 6 (36 squares) makes about 39" (99 cm) square with the border.
How do you make the flower in a daisy granny square?
Work a small gold circle, then make slim chain petals into the front loops of its stitches. The next round goes into the back loops behind the petals, so the daisy sits on top of the square.
How long does it take to crochet a granny square blanket?
Each 6" daisy square takes about 35 to 45 minutes. A throw takes about 55 to 70 hours including joining and border, while a queen coverlet takes 160 hours or more.
Can I use leftover yarn for this blanket?
Yes, it's a great scrap project. Keep the cream frames and daisy petals in one consistent yarn so the squares match, and use any worsted-weight greens for the puff rounds. Mixing more shades makes a lovely scrappy meadow look.
