About this pattern
This hanging toilet paper holder crochet pattern keeps spare rolls tidy and makes your bathroom wall look lovely too. A flat caramel panel with a scalloped edge holds three rolls sideways in open mesh pockets, so you can see at a glance when it's time to restock. Two layered flowers with pearl centers add a sweet finishing touch. It's worked in one color, uses about two balls of cotton and comes together in a relaxing afternoon or two. It makes a charming housewarming or bridal shower gift.
Skill level: Easy. You'll work hdc rows with simple increases and decreases, a basic mesh, a shell edging and a layered flower. Perfect for an advanced beginner.
Common mistakes & how to fix them
- Keep the panel edges straight
- Hdc rows tend to lean and the turning chain can leave gaps. Work the first hdc of each row firmly into the very first stitch and the last hdc into the very last stitch, and count to 20 every few rows. A straight edge makes the scalloped border much easier.
- Fit the pockets to your rolls
- Before sewing, wrap a pocket around one of your rolls. It should cover the roll from top to bottom with a little stretch. For thicker rolls, add 2 mesh rows (work to Row 17 before the sc row) and leave 1 extra panel row between pockets. For thinner rolls, work 2 fewer mesh rows.
- Make the flowers pop
- Pull the magic ring tightly closed so no hole shows behind the pearl. When working Rnd 4, insert the hook into the back of the Rnd 2 sl sts only, not through the front petals, so the two layers stay separate. Pinch each back petal into shape before sewing the flower down.
Materials needed
Yarn
- Yarn: Worsted weightWorsted weight
Tools
- Crochet hook: 4.5 mm (US 7). Use a hook a little smaller than the label suggests, so the panel is firm and doesn't sag.
- 2 metal rings, 1.5" to 2" (4 to 5 cm) across, in gold or brass
- 2 pearl beads or pearl buttons, 10 to 12 mm (flower centers)
- Sewing needle and matching thread (for the pearls)
- Tapestry (yarn) needle
- Stitch markers or locking pins (for marking pocket rows)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- A sturdy wall hook or over-the-door hook
Gauge & finished measurements
Gauge: Gauge matters most for the pockets, which need to wrap around your rolls. 15 hdc and 11 rows = 4" (10 cm) with a 4.5 mm hook. Quick check: After Row 9, the panel is 20 sts and about 5.25" (13.5 cm) wide. Each mesh pocket: about 4" x 7.5" (10 x 19 cm) before sewing.
| Finished size | About 6.25" (16 cm) wide and 29" (74 cm) tall including the scalloped edge, or about 33" (84 cm) with both rings. |
|---|---|
| Holds | 3 standard rolls, lying sideways in mesh pockets. |
| Estimated time | 6 to 8 hours (about 4 hours for the panel and edging, 2 hours for the pockets and 1 hour for the flowers). |

Assembly
- 1
Block first. Block the edged panel and the three pockets flat (see Care Instructions) and let them dry. Straight pieces are much easier to sew neatly.
- 2
Sew on the pockets. Lay the panel RS up. Center Pocket 1 across the panel, leaving 2 panel sts free on each side. Whip stitch the pocket's Row 1 edge straight across panel Row 12. Then bow the pocket outward and sew its Row 16 edge across panel Row 23. Leave both long sides of the pocket open. Sew Pocket 2 from Row 26 to Row 37, and Pocket 3 from Row 40 to Row 51. Go over the first and last stitch of each seam twice for strength.
- 3
Add the flowers. Center one flower on Row 56 and the other on Row 65. Sew each one down around the base of the back petals only, so all ten petals stay loose and dimensional.
- 4
Attach the rings. Fold one ring tab over a ring. Sew both ends of the tab to the WS of the panel behind Rows 74 to 77, so the ring sits just above the scalloped top. Attach the second ring the same way behind Rows 1 to 4 at the bottom point.
- 5
Weave in all ends on the WS.
- 6
Hang and load. Hang the holder from a sturdy hook by the top ring. Slide a roll into each pocket sideways, from either open side. The bottom ring is decorative, or you can hang a small tassel or air-freshener sachet from it.
Important notes
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): MR = magic ring, ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet, hdc2tog = half double crochet 2 together (decrease), st(s) = stitch(es), sp(s) = space(s), sk = skip, beg = beginning, rep = repeat, Rnd(s) / Row(s) = round(s) / row(s), RS / WS = right side / wrong side.
- Tip: Hdc2tog: Yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop. Yo, insert hook in next st, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Yo and draw through all 5 loops.
- Tip: Shell: 5 dc worked in the same st, used for the scalloped edging.
- Tip: Turning chain: In the panel, ch 2 at the start of each row does not count as a stitch. Work the first hdc into the first stitch.
- Tip: Washing: Hand wash in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent. Gently squeeze, never wring, so the flowers and scallops keep their shape. Machine washing isn't recommended because of the pearls and metal rings.
- Tip: Drying: Press out water with a towel and pat the rings dry right away to prevent tarnish. Lay the holder flat on a dry towel, straighten the edges and fluff the petals. Let it dry completely before hanging. Don't tumble dry.
- Tip: Blocking: Before assembly, pin the panel flat to 5.25" wide, with the scallops pinned out into neat curves. Pin each pocket to 4" x 7.5" so the mesh squares open evenly. Mist with water or steam lightly and let dry.
- Tip: Bathroom tip: Hang it away from the shower and wash it every few weeks. Cotton dries faster in a ventilated spot.
- Tip: Yarn: Worsted weight (#4 Medium) cotton or cotton blend in caramel, camel, tan or toffee: about 220 yd (200 m), so 2 standard 100 g balls. Cotton holds its shape on the wall and handles bathroom humidity well.
- Tip: Gauge: If your panel is wider, go down a hook size; if it's narrower, go up one. Rolls vary, so wrap a finished pocket around one of your rolls before sewing it on.
Pattern FAQ
Is a crochet toilet paper holder a good beginner project?
Yes. The panel is just hdc rows with simple increases and decreases, and the pockets are a basic mesh. The flowers and scalloped edge add a little challenge, but each step is short and easy to redo if needed.
How much yarn does a hanging toilet paper holder take?
This design uses about 220 yards (200 m) of worsted cotton, or two 100 g balls. Each extra pocket and its panel section adds roughly 25 yards.
Can I make it hold 2 or 4 rolls?
Yes. Each pocket zone is 14 rows (12 for the pocket plus 2 between pockets). Your edging count will change, so just keep it a multiple of 4.
What can I use instead of pearl beads?
Small buttons, a French knot in contrasting yarn, or a crocheted bobble all work well. If small children are around, skip beads and buttons and use a French knot so nothing can come loose.
