Huggable Winter Friend
Approx. 11 in (28 cm) tall sitting, including pompom, and 9 in (23 cm) wide with arms
Why you'll love it
- Plush chenille yarn makes him extra soft and huggable.
- The head and body are one piece, so there is less sewing.
- A flat base and front-facing feet let him sit on his own.
- The striped fringe scarf and blue mittens give him a cozy winter look.
- Bulky yarn means the whole snowman works up in a weekend.
Materials needed
Tools
- 5.0 mm (US H-8) crochet hook for the chenille pieces
- 3.5 mm (US E-4) crochet hook for the nose and holly
- Large-eye tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers
- Two 12 mm black safety eyes
- Two 20 mm wooden heart buttons
- Polyester fiberfill, approx. 6 oz (170 g)
- A 3 in (7.5 cm) pompom maker or a piece of cardboard
- Optional: a small sealed pouch of plastic pellets for weighting the base
Gauge & finished measurements
Gauge: 14 sc and 16 rounds = 4 in (10 cm) in bulky chenille with a 5.0 mm hook. Base gauge: Rounds 1-9 of the body measure about 4.9 in (12.5 cm) across. A tight fabric with no gaps matters more than exact gauge.

Assembly
- 1
Nose: sew the orange nose centered between and slightly below the eyes, at about Rounds 28-29.
- 2
Feet: place the feet at the front of the body, side by side, with their magic ring ends facing forward and their bottoms level with the base. Sew each foot to the body around Rounds 11-16 so the snowman sits steadily.
- 3
Arms: sew the flat top of each arm to the side of the body at about Rounds 19-20, just below the neck, so the mittens rest beside the feet.
- 4
Buttons: sew the two heart buttons down the center front of the body at about Round 14 and Round 17.
- 5
Beanie: fold up the brim, place the beanie on the head so the brim sits just above the eyes, and sew around the inside of the brim with the tail. Tie the pompom to the top of the beanie and sew it firmly in place.
- 6
Holly: sew the two leaves and three berries to the right side of the beanie, just above the brim.
- 7
Scarf: wrap the scarf once around the neck at Round 22, crossing it at the front so one end hangs down over the right arm. Tack it in place at the back and front with a few stitches so it stays put.
Important notes
- Tip: This is an original pattern inspired by the photo. Hidden construction details, yarn weight, and dimensions are interpreted from the image, and the pattern has not been physically test-crocheted.
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, MR = magic ring, BLO = back loop only, dec = decrease (invisible single crochet decrease).
- Tip: Work all amigurumi pieces in continuous rounds with a stitch marker. The scarf is worked in turned rows; the turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
- Tip: Chenille stitches are hard to see. Work slowly, count often, and feel for the top loops of each stitch.
- Tip: Safety: safety eyes, wooden buttons, and the pellet pouch can be choking hazards. For babies and children under 3, embroider the eyes, use crocheted buttons, skip the pellets, and sew every part on very securely.
Pattern FAQ
Is chenille yarn good for beginners?
It is soft and works up fast, but the stitches can be hard to see. Use a stitch marker every round, count by feeling the tops of the stitches, and avoid pulling out work repeatedly, since chenille can shed when frogged.
Can I use regular yarn instead of chenille?
Yes. Worsted (#4) acrylic with a 3.5 mm hook gives a snowman about 7.5 in (19 cm) tall. The stitch counts stay the same, and the stitches will be easier to see.
How do I make sure he sits up?
The back-loop round creates a flat base. Stuff the lower body firmly, add a small pouch of plastic pellets for weight if he is not for a young child, and sew the feet so their bottoms are level with the base.
Why are there gaps between my stitches?
Chenille is slippery and can loosen as you stuff. Try a smaller hook, keep your tension firm, and avoid overstuffing, which stretches the fabric.
How do I clean him?
Spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. If needed, hand wash gently in cool water, squeeze out the water without wringing, and let him air dry completely. Do not machine wash if you used wooden buttons or pellets.
