Heirloom Bedspread
Queen bedspread approx. 98 x 110 in (249 x 279 cm); each square approx. 12 x 12 in (30.5 x 30.5 cm)
Why you'll love it
- Single-color design means far fewer ends to weave in than a multicolor bedspread.
- Raised puff-stitch petals give a sculpted, luxurious texture.
- Bulky yarn makes each 12 in square quick to finish and easy to carry.
- Every round has a clear per-side stitch count, so errors are easy to catch.
- One motif makes a throw, any bed size, or matching pillow covers.
Materials needed
Tools
- 6.0 mm (US J-10) crochet hook
- Large-eye tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Locking stitch markers

Gauge & finished measurements
Gauge: 11 dc and 6 rows = 4 in (10 cm) in bulky yarn with a 6.0 mm hook. Motif gauge: Rounds 1-4 measure about 5.5 in (14 cm) from side to side, and a finished square (Rounds 1-10) measures about 12 in (30.5 cm) square.

Assembly
- 1
Make 72 squares (Rounds 1-10), checking that every side has 35 sc.
- 2
Weave in the ends of each square on the wrong side.
- 3
Wet or steam block each square to 12 x 12 in, pinning the corners square. Lightly fluff the puff petals and let them dry completely.
- 4
Lay the squares out in 9 rows of 8, right side up.
- 5
Work the 8 horizontal seams, then the 7 vertical seams, as described in Joining the Squares.
- 6
Work Border Rounds 1-3 around the entire bedspread.
- 7
Give the border a light final steam so it lies flat. Do not press the puff petals.
Important notes
- Tip: This is an original pattern inspired by the photo. Hidden construction details, yarn weight, and dimensions are interpreted from the image, and the pattern has not been physically test-crocheted.
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, MR = magic ring.
- Tip: Special stitches: puff stitch, 2-dc cluster, and reverse single crochet are written out in full in the section notes where they are used.
- Tip: The ch-3 at the beginning of dc rounds counts as a dc. The ch-1 at the beginning of sc rounds and the ch-2 at the start of Round 2 do not count as stitches.
- Tip: Work every round with the right side facing; do not turn.
- Tip: Stitch counts do not include the corner ch-2 spaces, except in Round 6, where the ch-1 mesh spaces are listed separately.
- Tip: Yarn amounts are estimates based on the stated gauge. Tension differences can change yardage noticeably on a project this size.
- Tip: Choose a soft, machine-washable acrylic or acrylic blend for a bedspread that will be laundered often.
Pattern FAQ
How many squares do I need for other bed sizes?
With 12 in squares: a throw uses 20 squares (4 x 5), a twin bedspread 63 squares (7 x 9), a full or queen bedspread 72 squares (8 x 9), and a king bedspread 90 squares (10 x 9). Measure your bed and the drop you want before choosing a size.
Can I use worsted weight yarn instead of bulky?
Yes. With worsted (#4) yarn and a 5 mm hook, the square will measure about 8.5 in. You will need roughly twice as many squares for the same size bedspread. The stitch counts and instructions stay the same.
My petals look small and flat. What went wrong?
Pull each loop of the puff stitch up to about 3/4 in and keep the loops the same length before closing the stitch. A slightly looser tension in Round 2 also helps the petals look full.
Why is my square cupping or ruffling?
Cupping usually means a corner increase was missed or your dc is much taller than gauge. Ruffling usually means extra stitches. Check the per-side counts after each round from Round 4: 15, 19, 23, 27, 29, 33, 35.
How do I make the matching pillows?
Make a larger square by repeating Rounds 9 and 10 four more times after Round 10, which gives about 20 in with 59 stitches per side. Make two of these per pillow and sc them together around a 20 in pillow form.
How should I wash the finished bedspread?
Follow the care label on your yarn. Most acrylic bulky yarns can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cool water and tumble dried on low or laid flat. A large bedspread is heavy when wet, so a large-capacity or laundromat machine is a good idea.
