Puff Flower Granny Bedspread Crochet Pattern

This puff flower granny square bedspread crochet pattern pairs a bright teal flower with a ring of soft cream puffs in every square. The squares are framed with classic granny rounds and finished with a deep lacy border that hangs over the sides of the bed. Teal puff dots and a scalloped teal edge give the border a pretty, cottage-style finish.

Why you'll love it

  • The teal flower and cream puff ring give every square bold texture and color.
  • Granny rounds are quick, familiar, and easy to keep count of.
  • The lace border drapes over the sides of the bed like a skirt.
  • Teal puff dots and a scalloped edge tie the border to the squares.
  • The square also makes matching pillow covers and smaller throws.

    Assembly

    1. 1

Make 63 squares (Rounds 1-10), checking that every side has 33 sc.

    2. 2

Weave in all ends and block each square to 8.5 x 8.5 in, fluffing the puffs.

    3. 3

Lay the squares out in 9 rows of 7, right side up, with all flowers facing the same way.

    4. 4

Work the 8 horizontal seams, then the 6 vertical seams.

    5. 5

Work Border Rounds 1-12 around the entire square field, keeping a marker in each corner.

    6. 6

Lay the bedspread flat and lightly steam the border so the lace opens and the scallops lie flat.

    7. 7

Place it on the bed with the square field on top of the mattress and the lace border hanging over the sides.

    Important notes

    • Tip: This is an original pattern inspired by the photo. Hidden construction details, yarn weight, and dimensions are interpreted from the image, and the pattern has not been physically test-crocheted.
    • Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, MR = magic ring.
    • Tip: The ch-3 at the start of dc rounds counts as a dc. The ch 1 at the start of sc rounds and the ch 2 before a first puff do not count as stitches.
    • Tip: Work all rounds with the right side facing; do not turn.
    • Tip: Square stitch counts do not include the corner ch-2 spaces.
    • Tip: Yarn amounts are estimates based on the stated gauge. Puff stitches use more yarn than standard stitches, so tension affects yardage.

    Pattern FAQ

How do I make it fit a different bed?

Measure the top of your mattress and divide by 8.5 in to find how many squares you need in each direction. A twin top is about 5 x 9 squares and a king top is about 9 x 9 squares. The lace border adds about 8 in on every side.

How do I work Border Round 2 for a different size?

Each square edge gives 35 stitches in Border Round 1, which is exactly 7 loops. Work the bracketed repeat 7 times for every square along that edge, then make one corner loop at each corner.

My border is ruffling or cupping. What should I do?

Ruffling usually means extra loops or chains that are too long; cupping usually means tight chains or missed corner increases. Check your loop count against each round and try ch 4 or ch 6 to adjust the drape.

    Can I use cotton yarn?

Yes, but cotton makes a much heavier bedspread and the puffs will look flatter. A soft acrylic or cotton-acrylic blend keeps the puffs plump and the bedspread easier to wash.

    How should I wash it?

Follow the care label on your yarn. Most acrylic and blend yarns can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cool water. Dry flat or tumble dry on low and reshape the border while damp.
