Assembly
- 1
Romper embroidery: between the popcorn rounds, embroider 8 small trees evenly around the bubble in green fly stitch with a gold French knot star, and add white lazy-daisy flowers between them.
- 2
Bib: sew the bib to the center front of the waist, with its bottom edge overlapping Round 1.
- 3
Straps: sew the plain end of each strap to the back waist, about 2 in (5 cm) from the center. Cross the straps over the back, bring them over the shoulders, and sew the 20 mm buttons to the top corners of the bib.
- 4
Try the romper on the baby, or check the measurements, and adjust the strap length by moving the buttons.
- 5
Weave in all ends on all three pieces and lightly steam them to shape.
Important notes
- Tip: This is an original pattern inspired by the photo. Hidden details are interpreted from the image, and the pattern has not been physically test-crocheted.
- Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, MR = magic ring, BLO = back loop only, dec = decrease.
- Tip: The ch 2 at the start of hdc rounds and rows does not count as a stitch. The ch-3 at the start of dc rounds counts as a dc.
- Tip: Sizing assumes a 3-6 month waist of about 17 in (43 cm) and a head of about 15 in (38 cm). Babies vary, so measure if possible.
- Tip: Safety: buttons, bobbles, and appliques can be choking hazards. Sew everything on very securely, and always supervise babies wearing embellished clothing. Never leave a baby unattended with bonnet ties.
Pattern FAQ
How do I make a bigger size?
Use a 4.5 mm hook for about 6-12 months. Add 2 rounds to the bubble section, 1 row to each panel, and 4 rounds to each bootie sole for the larger foot.
Which yarn is best for babies?
Choose a soft, machine-washable baby acrylic or a cotton blend. Avoid fuzzy or scratchy yarns that can shed fibers.
Can I skip the crotch buttons?
Yes. Simply sew the front and back panels together at the crotch, but buttons make diaper changes much easier.
How do I wash the set?
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with baby detergent, or hand wash. Lay flat to dry and reshape the scallops and popcorns while damp.
