Snowman Curtain Tieback Crochet Pattern

This snowman curtain tieback crochet pattern turns an ordinary curtain into a festive focal point. A cheerful snowman in a red hat, mittens, and snowflake scarf sits on a wreath of holly leaves, pine sprigs, red berries, and gold bead sprays. Beaded dangles with snowflakes, pinecones, berries, and gold bells sway below, and a green strap with a bow holds the curtain in place.

  • Hook loops on the strap make it easy to fit any standard tieback hook.
  • It is a great way to use up leftover red, green, and white yarn.

    Assembly

    1. 1

Greenery: sew the 6 holly leaves around the edge of the backing disc, radiating outward like a wreath, and tack each tip down. Tuck 4 pine sprigs between the leaves, mainly at the sides and bottom.

    2. 2

Snowman: sew the body to the lower center of the disc and the head just above it. Sew the hat on the head with the pompom at one side, and add 1 small leaf and 1 berry cluster to the hat.

    3. 3

Face and details: sew on the nose, embroider a black smile and pink cheeks, and sew the two buttons down the front of the body.

    4. 4

Mittens and scarf: sew a mitten on each side of the body so the arms point outward. Wrap the scarf band around the neck, overlapping at the front, and sew the tail so it hangs down over one side of the body.

    5. 5

Berries and sprays: sew 4 berry clusters onto the greenery around the snowman. Push the wire ends of the 6 bead sprays between the leaves and stitch them securely to the disc.

    6. 6

Dangles: sew the top of each of the 10 strands along the bottom edge of the backing disc, spacing them evenly.

    7. 7

Attach to the strap: center the decorated disc on the strap and sew the back of the disc firmly to the strap. Sew the green bow to the strap just above the snowman's hat.

    8. 8

Use: wrap the strap around the gathered curtain and slip both hook loops onto the wall-mounted tieback hook.

    Important notes

    • Tip: This is an original pattern inspired by the photo. Hidden construction details, yarn weight, and dimensions are interpreted from the image, and the pattern has not been physically test-crocheted.
    • Tip: Abbreviations (US terms): ch = chain, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, sl st = slip stitch, MR = magic ring, dec = decrease (invisible single crochet decrease).
    • Tip: Small round pieces are worked in continuous rounds with a stitch marker. The strap and scarf are worked in turned rows; the turning ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
    • Tip: Choose lightweight beads and bells so the tieback does not sag or pull on the curtain.
    • Tip: Safety: beads, bells, wire, and safety eyes are small parts and choking hazards. Hang the tieback out of reach of young children and pets.

    Pattern FAQ

How long should the strap be?

Gather your curtain where you want to tie it, measure around it, and add 1 in (2.5 cm). Chain that length plus one for the foundation, keeping the total close to a multiple of 10.

Can I make it without beads?

Yes. Use French knots in gold yarn for the bead details, crocheted gold balls instead of bells, and leave the strap plain. The tieback will be lighter and safer for homes with children.

Can I make a matching pair?

Yes. For the second tieback, sew the scarf tail and hat pompom on the opposite side so the two snowmen mirror each other on either side of the window.

    What yarn works best?

Cotton or a cotton blend gives crisp leaves and needles that hold their shape. Acrylic is softer and slightly fluffier, which suits the snowman. You can mix the two.

How do I clean and store it?

Spot clean with a damp cloth and let it air dry. Store it flat in a box with tissue paper so the leaves, dangles, and snowman keep their shape.
